Choosing Paint Colors for Walls (the Easy Way)

As one of the bloggers over at My Colortopia, I get to answer inquiries and write articles about choosing color for the home, which really is one of my most favorite topics in the universe ever. They asked me to write about my method for choosing paint color for walls so I?m going to share the easiest way!

When you?re about to paint your walls something other than white or a pale neutral, I?m a firm believer in starting with something that will actually live in the space as a source of inspiration. It can be a decorative object, a textile, something organic, a print or piece of art ? anything you love that inspires you. Once you find that thing or that fabric, the easiest way to choose a paint color for the walls is to use that source of inspiration as your starting point.

In my own master bedroom, I wanted a soothing gray with a hint of blue on the walls, so when I repainted it last year, I pulled my color from this Ikat toss pillow.

kates bedroom ikat pillow on sofa

Fabric or artwork is always a great place to start, but it really can be anything that you use as your jumping off point. How about the pattern on this loose tea canister? Your wall color can be inspired by an object just like this. Imagine medium gray walls with vibrant coral or tangerine and spa blue accents, gorgeous!

To see a ton of inspiring color palettes, be sure to visit one of my favorite sources Design Seeds ? a blog all about pulling color inspiration from both organic and tangible objects. Also, be sure to check out the My Image Inspiration Tool ? upload an image and palette will be generated for you!

Here?s another fabric example. I love this Panama Wave fabric from the Waverly Spring 2012 line (soon to be released). This vibrant print would be wonderful in a craft room, living room, home office, or teen room. If you used this fabric as inspiration, say for the window panels or toss pillows or to line the back of cabinets, it?s easy to go right to a paint swatch and pull a soft lemongrass or green color ? a paler version of the wave ? out of the fabric swatch to use on the walls.

choose paint color from fabric

Or take this medallion print pillow cover with a fabulous motif in various shades of blue. Use it as your jumping off point to search for a deep indigo for dramatic bedroom walls.

old world blue paint blue fabric

Not only can you pull your wall color out of your inspiration swatch, you can decorate an entire room around a great patterned textile. I found this inexpensive toss pillow at Target, I loved it?s inky blue, cream, and spa blue palette. A great pattern like this can easily become the theme for the whole space! Add a gray upholstered headboard, crisp hotel bed linens, white nightstand and trim, a complementary rug and a few more accessories, and you?d have an elegant and enveloping bedroom with this deep indigo blue color on the walls.

Leyland Armless Chair in French Ticking Blue; Sassy Ceramic Table Lamp; Arley Mirror; Medallion Pillow by Target; Old World Blue Paint by Glidden; Carleen Indigo Rug; Bowfront Bedside Chest by Malibu Loft; Greek Key Duvet, Williams-Sonoma.

Two rules of thumb I follow when choosing paint color for walls.

1) Keep in mind you always want to test a 2 to 3 foot sample on the wall before buying a gallon of paint from just looking at a swatch. A few extra dollars spent on samples will allow you the opportunity to see the color on your walls in the changing light to decide if it?s too dark, too light, too intense, too blah, etc.

2) Lean towards a ?muddier? less saturated version of the color for the walls. I?ve found that colors with a hint of gray or umber as an undertone look much better on the walls than their more saturated cousins which can often be too vibrant and jarring.

Now for some weekend fun! The team behind My Colortopia put together this interactive quiz for all of you. Want to know the best color scheme that fits your personality and lifestyle? Test out this My Life My Colors quiz!

(Visit the site to participate)

Mine were pretty close, except for a peachy color thrown in as a suggestion. What do you think of your results? Were they accurate? Have fun discovering the recommended palette for you!

Wishing you all a fantastic weekend!

Energy saving tips for the kitchen

One in two Australians are switching off appliances in an effort to save on their energy bill. Whether it?s an imminent carbon tax and subsequent energy price hikes or caring for the environment, TVs and beer fridges are being given the flick nationwide.

Turning off appliancesiscertainly the mosteffective way of saving energy, but forthose looking for a lessdramatic solution,Appliances Online has put together a couple of energy savingtips for the kitchen.

Power saver: Keep heating and cooling appliances apart

Energy is used in kitchen appliances to either heat or cool. This means that if you place a cooling appliance such as a fridge or freezer next to a heating appliance such as dishwasher or an oven, the fridge will work harder to keep cool and vice versa.

While fridges and ovens are usually well insulated they?re notcompletely impervious to the transfer of temperature. For example, opening the fridge door while the dishwasher is workingwill allow cool, dry air to escape and let in warm, humid air. This will make your fridge work harder and use more energy to keep cool.

How are the seals on your fridge and oven looking? Old, dry, cracked seals may leak cool air from the fridgeor warm air from the oven, causing your appliances to work harder.

If rearranging the kitchen isn?t an option, you can tryto reduce the direct transfer of heat between two appliancesbyfitting a small peice of heat-resistant insulation between them. It might not be the ideal fix, but if you are unable to move around your appliances it?s an option at least.

The energy saver - Morphy Richards electric kettle

Power saver: Use the kettle to boil water

According to Treehugger.com ? a Discovery company ? boiling water withan electrickettle is more efficient than using amicrowave or a pot on the stove. Using 350mls of water as a test, Treehugger boiled water with all three methods and found the electric kettle was 81 per cent efficient, the microwave was 47 per cent efficient and a pot on the stove was 31 per cent efficient.

Do you have any energy saving tips for the kitchen you?dlike toshare with us?

Bathroom Shower Doors ? A simple solution for giving your bathroom a stylish new image!

Shower doors are not only designed to stop water escaping from your shower stall or tub, they can also be used to add a touch of style to your bathroom. If you?re looking for a more effective and long lasting alternative to your old shower curtain, installing a glass shower door could be the answer. Shower screens and doors made from tempered glass are sturdy and can stand up to years of use. At the same time, the type of glass you choose can enhance your bathroom?s appearance. For example, clear glass is perfect for a light and spacious look. Frosted, molded, colored glass or etched patterns are other options to consider for a unique and attractive finish.

Frameless shower doors are really popular in contemporary bathrooms, with their sleek, modern look. The shower door hardware can be mounted straight onto the glass, for a smart and tidy finish. More traditional framed doors with frames made from various metals, including aluminum and chrome, are another common choice. Think about what style would fit in best with your bathroom?s theme and character. If you?ve a particular look in mind for you bathroom?s makeover, not to mention the budget, you might want to consider having a custom shower door made to measure.

When buying a new shower door, it?s important to think about practicalities as well as just aesthetics. There?s no point in installing a luxurious folding door only to find it bumps into your sink or toilet when you open it! Sliding showers doors are brilliant if space is limited, as they work by gliding along tracks above your tub. For barrier free access to your shower stall, a trackless or accordion-style door can be ideal. Once you?ve chosen the door that?s best for your bathroom?s size and layout, it should be simple to install and will instantly improve your bathroom?s style and function.

A restoration fit for Hollywood royalty

Among all of the celebrity homes that have hit the market lately, few stand out as a historic gem. This one in Connecticut, however, is definitely worth a look. ?The Cotton Tavern? sits on 40 acres of what is commonly referred to as the ?Quiet Corner? of Connecticut, where the population is surprisingly low. The Federal-style house was built around 1770, and has been added onto over time whenever the residing family needed more space. Owner Renee Zellweger recently put the house on the market for $1.5 million.

A very careful restoration

The list of renovations done on this house are impressive. There are the usual things you would expect, such as an extensive overhaul of the plumbing and electrical systems, as well as the addition of a heating and air conditioning system. The kitchen was completely rebuilt, but it was done with care?the custom kitchen cabinets were built to reflect the time period in which the original house was built, and the hardwood floors were carefully chosen to match the rest of the house. Crown molding and new baseboards were installed, but they mimic the ?real thing.?

The library

Some important elements were kept in place or restored in such a way that the original integrity of the house wasn?t compromised. The rear staircase was rebuilt, probably for safety concerns, but it was designed to look just like the original. Most of the original hardwood floors were kept, and so were many of the bathroom fixtures, including the tubs and sinks. Rather than strip the paneling from the majestic library, it was painstakingly restored.

In keeping with the look of the original home, the siding is painted wood clapboard, and the replacement windows blend in well with those that have been there for over a century. The fireplaces? There are seven of them, and they are all original.

The guest cottage is the original carriage house, and it still has the original doors. It also has an abundance of rough-hewn ceiling beams, wide-plank hardwood floors and replacement windows that are customized to look like the originals on the main house.

All of this is tucked away behind dry stone walls that are five feet high and four feet thick. That?s a nice historical touch that also provides some serious security.

The kitchen

A refreshing new life for an old house

Many celebrities with virtually unlimited funds tend to cast aside older homes in exchange for something new. After all, new construction is often much easier than careful restoration, so it?s nice to see someone pouring their cash into keeping up the integrity of their historic home.

The new owners of this place could consider putting in energy-efficient improvements when it is time to do a bit more renovation work. As any old house lover will tell you, the renovation on a home built in the 1700?s never actually ends. In a few years, we might see this home touted in Architectural Digest, and it could well have more improvements that make this historic home more than a little green.

The Basics When It Comes To Improving Your Home

When you are remodeling a room that has a lot of moisture, like a bathroom, consider replacing the wall board with a water-resistant version. This water-resistant board is commonly referred to as ?green board? by contractors and those in the industry. It can tolerate moisture rich environments, and will resist mold as well as water.

Pay attention to the reputation of any contractor you intend to hire, not how cheap they promise to do the work. A contractor who offers very low prices is usually someone who performs shoddy work that will not last. When they are done you might find some things that still need fixed! Not only that, but if a project is done incorrectly, it could pose a danger to those in your home. Go with a contractor you can trust.

Think about padding your furniture if you have small children. There are prefabricated corner covers available for purchase; however, foam tape can also achieve the desired effect. Another thing you can try is to tape dangerous wiring down that could be harmful to your children.

When you are making home improvements, spend some time on your porch. This area is the first space that your visitors notice and is often what they use to form their first thoughts about the residence. Make sure it is all neatly organized and, if possible, add a little style with outdoor decorations, such as flowers, varnish, lights, or furniture. This helps add some property value.

Any home improvement you make should make sense in terms of your house?s location. It?s better to install central air in warm climates and a fireplace in regions that have cooler weather. Also having a swimming pool is a great if you live around this area, but it may not be such a good idea if you live in Northern United States.

If you?ve bought a home that you now want to sell, fix up the outside of the house before you fix problems with wiring or plumbing. A poor external appearance can be bad for sale prices, as well as the length of time a house stays on the market. Things like plumbing and heating can be tackled later.

Make sure you have the proper equipment necessary for your safety as you work on a project that calls for such things. This includes wearing a hard hat when working around possible falling objects and using a back harness for lifting.

See if the contractors you are interested in have the proper licenses for your state. This can be found out by checking with your state government, either by phone or their website. If the contractor is unlicensed, he may not be legitimate or he may have done something untoward that caused him to lose the license.

Home improvement projects might seem daunting at first. Simply breaking it down into smaller pieces will make it much easier to manage. You should start by making a plan and understanding the preparation needed for the successful completion of your project. The advice given here will assist you in the planning stages of making those decisions.

A Beginner?s Guide to Flipping Houses

If you dream of making money in real estate, it is time to stop dreaming and get to work, because money in real estate is not just a vague illusion. It may even by a young and inexperienced person, when you are done learning to ?flip? houses.

A friend of mine, we?ll call her Tai, made a fortune in real estate, beginning at the age of 20 years without any help from anyone. Here?s how it done:

Tai began by buying an annuity from HUD, which allowed him into the house with no money down. Then fixed and sold it. At the end they had made enough profit for a second fixer-upper, but this time she paid all cash. Tai went right to work fixing her second house, and when they, that they sold it $ 44,000 profit, which allows him to pay money for her third house!

Now Tai was comfortable with her formula, and in a short time, it was his third home vice versa, realizing enough profit to pay money for another house, and the ability to buy the custom pickup of her dreams. And all this happened in a period of only nine months!

Tai formula was simple. She finds houses that are only cosmetic work necessary to avoid that the necessary structural repairs. They did all the painting herself, inside and out, and updated the lighting of the building, plumbing and carpeting. After renovations were completed, all three houses sold quickly, and a big advantage.

Flipping houses is to make the tried and true, a fortune in real estate is not about someone trying to tell you that it is not possible to hear, or that you have too much need to start money. That?s not true. You can buy houses without money often help through the various loan programs, and close your seller costs.

I know what I mean. My husband and I have our 27th house Earlier this year, from which no money, and we expect a profit of at least $ 100,000 for just one month of hard work to do!

But we take the process one step further, so that our houses outshine the competition by also using Design Psychology, although our customers will never know. All you know what it is, that they feel good when they in our homes that they want, they make to buy, even if they cost more than the house next door.

There is no other company can make so much money with as little start-up costs in a short time, such as investing in real estate. In fact, more millionaires made their fortunes in real estate than any other company. And you can too. You just have to stop dreaming and get started.

Hard Time On Your Home Improvement Project? Try These Ideas!

Using your eyes to judge a measurement, angle or surface to determine how level it is should always be avoiding when you are doing woodworking. Use a level, speed square, and tape measure for accurate woodworking.

Sharp corners on furniture can be a danger to children and pets, and padding this furniture is a great way to avoid any injuries. You can do this with either corner protectors or foam tape. Also, loose wiring should be taped down, as it can strangle a child.

Turn off water if you are doing kitchen or bathroom home improvement projects. Before starting any home improvement project, know where the water shutoff valve is. This will ensure a flood does not happen.

A landscaping project can enhance the beauty of your property. Planting everything from flowers to a hedge will not only improve your appreciation for your home but also your neighbors?. High quality landscaping makes a great first impression on visitors and will make your property more valuable.

Think of the paint before you do anything else in the room. If you are planning on installing new floors, do any painting first. Even if you protect your flooring with the appropriate items you can still splash paint on it.

The result is bent bristles which wear out quicker. Instead, use a rack or peg to hang your broom. This allows the bristles to remain straight, which prolongs the useful life of the broom. You should also hang up your mop so they can properly dry, thus, preventing mildew.

For major work, hire someone who is experienced. Designers, contractors and architects have their title and their job for a specific reason. Their work can be complicated, and their level of skill has been developed through time and training. While sometimes it seems cheaper to do the job yourself, allowing the professionals to do the work will ensure it?s done the right way, the first time.

When redoing your home?s exterior siding, stucco can be a nice alternative. Installing stucco on the exterior of your home may not be the most difficult home improvement project, but it is in your best interest to hire an experienced professional.

You should get copies of all inspection reports, permit applications and the actual permits. Before you hire the contractor, ask about his policy concerning those files.

Tired of your bedroom?s old dresser? You don?t have to live with old furniture the way it is. Sanding and refinishing will give them a fresh new look. It is a great way to get a new look in your home and save a ton of money. There are an abundance of stains you can color your furniture with.

One improvement that can make your life easier is replacing ordinary paneling in areas with many pipes with waterproof paneling. Professionals often refer to this product by the name ?green board?, and it is better suited to water than typical drywall products. As an added extra it has normally been treated to resist mold growth.

Prioritize exterior repairs, such as roofing and painting, over interior work, such as plumbing and carpeting, if your main home improvement goal is to fix the house up for sale. A dingy or shabby exterior will make it harder to sell your house at the price you want.

Applying these tips to your home improvement plans will produce great results. Take these tips and add your own. Your home improvement journey has just begun!

Cyclone threat for Pilbara eases (The West Australian)

The Bureau of Meteorology has cancelled a flood warning for the Pilbara as Tropical Cyclone Iggy moves slowly in a south-south-easterly direction.

With the system expected to remain well off the coast, significant rainfall is unlikely over the northwest corner of the State in the immediate future.

The forecast for the Pilbara is scattered showers and thunderstorms in all but the far southeast.

Rain and squally thunderstorms are possible in coastal areas.

The bureau said rises in river levels in the Pilbara were possible but were expected to remain below flood level.

ACT union official Kim Sattler denies her account of events on Australia Day contradicts Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

News Limited reported on Sunday that Ms Sattler said her conversation with the prime minister's office had made her believe Opposition Leader Tony Abbott wanted to close the Aboriginal Tent Embassy.

Ms Gillard on Saturday said her former media adviser Tony Hodges did not suggest to Ms Sattler that Mr Abbott had said the embassy should be shut down.

Ms Sattler said the reports were "inaccurate".

"As I said in my statement yesterday, Tony Hodges from the prime minister's office told me what Tony Abbott had said - that people should `move on' from the tent embassy," she said in a statement on Sunday.

"Yesterday the prime minister gave an accurate account of my role."

Ms Gillard said Ms Sattler's statement on Saturday was consistent with her account of events on the Australia Day incident.

"Ms Sattler has obviously formed the view that she has not been accurately reported in today's media," Ms Gillard told reporters in Melbourne on Sunday.

"As I'm advised, she has put out a second statement today which once again accords with the views that I hold."

About 100 people surrounded a Canberra restaurant after they wrongly heard Mr Abbott had called for the tent embassy to be destroyed.

Mr Hodges resigned on Friday after admitting he had told Ms Sattler Mr Abbott was inside the Lobby restaurant and for that information to be passed on to someone.

Ms Gillard and Mr Abbott were evacuated from the restaurant when police and security personnel assessed there was a risk to them remaining there.

Mr Abbott said the Australian Federal Police must investigate the events that led to the protest.

The incident on January 26 was the most serious security breach involving Australian leaders since the 1970s, he said.

"It should be unthinkable for a security breach of this nature not to be fully investigated by the Australian Federal Police," he told reporters in Sydney on Sunday.

"The prime minister clearly does have to tell us what she was told verbatim by her office and by her former staffer. We need to know who knew what when and exactly who said what when."

Senior opposition frontbencher Christopher Pyne said the episode was another example of a government more concerned about itself than its citizens.

"There is a stench at the heart of this government, in the prime minister's office where dirty tricks and grubby political deals are elevated," Mr Pyne told Sky News on Sunday.

"The concerns of the Australian people about job security and other cost-of-living issues are pushed into the background."

Star Indian batsmen shouldn't quit: Sehwag (AAP)

India's ageing batting core shouldn't be culled because of their dismal Australian tour, stand-in skipper Virender Sehwag says.

And Sehwag has pleaded with angry Indian fans to support the battered Test team in a time of need, rubbishing perceptions the players don't care.

The Indian camp on Saturday described as "baseless" reports that senior players such as Rahul Dravid would retire in the wake of the 4-0 series loss to Australia.

Dravid, VVS Laxman and Sehwag all averaged less than 25 against the Australians, who secured a series sweep on Saturday by crushing India by 298 runs in the fourth Test in Adelaide.

Sehwag was adamant the experienced batting crop and Sachin Tendulkar, who averaged a mere mortal 35.87 this series, should continue playing.

"I don't think there is a need for retirement from anybody in this team," Sehwag said.

"They will take their call when they need it and when they think their time is up."

Sehwag said India's cricket-mad public had every right to be disturbed by the Test series thumping.

"They should be upset with our performances and I totally agree with them," he said.

"But this is the time the fans should back the team, back the players.

"When we won the World Cup, everybody was happy and everybody was cheering for Team India.

"And now is the time we need the support from everybody. They should back their own team."

Suggestions the players didn't care about the poor results were "unfair", he said.

"Everyone cares for his performance and when the team loses," Sehwag said.

"We are passionate about our game - we are passionate about our team.

"We are trying (but) it's not happening.

"It doesn't mean we are happy to lose here."

Sehwag summed up India's confused state by offering contrasting next steps for the tourists.

In one breath, he said "the best way out is to forget what happened".

And in the next, he said "we have to look at ourselves and what went wrong with us and then we have to take a call".

"We made our own plans and they didn't click - it happens," Sehwag said.

"It happens with every team, every player.

"The time is not good for the Indian team - we didn't do well.

"(But) times change and, next year, we'll see that top order getting a good start and scoring bigger."

"Yesterday the prime minister gave an accurate account of my role."

Senior opposition frontbencher Christopher Pyne said Ms Gillard's press conference on Saturday has left "so many questions unanswered".

"The prime minister's office has verballed Tony Abbott. A riot has occurred as a consequence," he told Sky News on Sunday.

"Her statements have been directly contradicted by the primary sources involved in this controversy."

About 100 people surrounded a Canberra restaurant after they incorrectly heard that Mr Abbott had called for the Tent Embassy to be destroyed.

Mr Hodges resigned on Friday after admitting he had told Ms Sattler that Mr Abbott was inside the restaurant and for that information to be passed on to protesters nearby at the tent embassy.

Ms Gillard and Mr Abbott were evacuated from the restaurant when police and security personnel assessed there was a risk to them remaining there.

"This is the most serious security scare an Australian prime minister has faced since the Fraser government," Mr Pyne said.

He said the episode was another example of a government more concerned about itself than the nation's citizens.

"There is a stench at the heart of this government, in the prime minister's office where dirty tricks and grubby political deals are elevated," Mr Pyne said.

"The concerns of the Australian people about job security and other cost-of-living issues are pushed into the background."

Docker Barlow has unfinished business (The West Australian)

He's been called a first-year sensation, a star midfielder, even a Brownlow Medal fancy.

Fremantle's Michael Barlow looks at himself and instead sees someone who has played just 22 AFL games and has plenty to prove.

For one, he can't promise that he will pick up an average of 28 possessions in every game this season as he did in his startling introduction to AFL ranks in 2010.

His glittering run of 13 matches ended with his left leg snapping under the impact of a sliding teammate Rhys Palmer at Patersons Stadium.

Critics lauded Barlow's poise, skills and composure before that unlucky break, but the on-baller said that he viewed himself as far from the complete footballer.

His defensive work, for example, was lacking in his eyes.

"To be honest my 2010 season from the outside looking in everyone was really stoked with it, but I think there were areas in my game that I really needed to improve and adapt for the betterment of both myself and the team," Barlow said.

"There's areas I want to improve and people from the outside looking in might not think I'm going as well or fulfilling the potential that they might have thought back then.

"But if I'm contributing towards what the team wants to achieve, providing that 100 per cent effort on game days, then I can be very content and I'll be very happy."

The 24-year-old's return to training on January 5 following his Christmas break marked almost 18 months to the day since his leg broke.

The vision of the fallen Docker futilely attempting to stand on the injured leg against Port Adelaide, only for it to give way, was unforgettable.

Barlow, however, prefers not to remember it at all. He admitted to mentally moving on soon after the collision.

In his mind, he was lucky to simply be at Fremantle, with the injury only a minor roadblock compared to the negative perceptions he had overcome to earn a shot at an AFL career at the age of 22.

"It's something I didn't dwell on much even in the initial stages because I'm so fortunate to be in the position I am," Barlow said of the injury.

"I'm paid to do what I do and the club was fantastic in looking after me and getting me back to playing footy last year.

"I played nine games last year and I've only played 22 games of footy personally.

"For me there's a lot of unfinished business going forward from a personal point of view, but that all ties in with how we want to succeed as a playing group and as a club here at Fremantle."

Not that there haven't been hardships and setbacks along the road to recovery.

The first, which Barlow concedes was the most difficult, was watching from the sidelines in 2010 as Fremantle played in finals against Hawthorn and Geelong without him.

He then had to maintain his patience until round 13 last year when he played his comeback match.

The midfielder picked up 25 touches against Melbourne that day and had onlookers already penning plaudits about his return.

It proved short-lived with soreness in the joint forcing him to miss Fremantle's next two matches.

Barlow said even in retrospect he did not think he had come back too early.

"You can't cheat your way through anything because they (the sports science staff) are right on top of their game and they're absolute professionals in what they do," Barlow said.

"I was given the all-clear and there were little things that prevented me from probably playing.

"But after that I was able to get eight games in a row eventually and I would have taken that every day of the week from the point of the injury going forward.

"I was stoked with what we were able to achieve and couldn't be more thankful to the sports science guys, physios, the doctors for what they've been able to do with me."

The final hold-up came at the end of the season.

Athletes returning from a broken leg often over-compensate with their balance and movement and Barlow subsequently found himself needing a minor calf operation.

Little more than three weeks out from the NAB Cup, he now feels he is finally hitting his straps with an eye towards playing an early part in the pre-season.

There will be no lack of confidence in the leg withstanding the physicality of the game when he returns to the field.

"To be honest when you're out there playing footy it's the furthest thing from your mind," Barlow said.

"You want to just be achieving with the other 21 guys out there to get the results.

"You can break a nail or get stood on your foot.

"You can't be conscious of one area of your body because you're going to be behind the eight-ball from the word go."

Under the regime of Ross Lyon - a coach renowned as a hard taskmaster - Barlow feels he is learning considerably more.

But the Victorian lays much of the credit for that not at the feet of Lyon, but stoppages coach Mark Stone, with whom he has worked closest during this pre-season.

Body positioning, attracting the ball and reading cues around congested situations have been priorities and as Barlow remarks, it is all about improvement.

"You can always improve," Barlow said.

"I rubbish suggestions that I don't need to learn because that's definitely not true."

Azarenka dominates Aus Open final (The West Australian)

International women?s tennis has a new monarch, Queen Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.

The reformed hot-head showed all of her new-found composure after a scratchy start to thrash 2008 champion Maria Sharapova in tonight?s Australian Open final to claim not only her first grand slam title, but also the coveted world No.1 position left vacant this week through the demise of Caroline Woznicki.

The 6-3 6-0 shocker in just 82 minutes handed Sharapova her second consecutive loss to a grand slam final debutant after being beaten by Petra Kvitova in last year?s Wimbledon final.

Azarenka?s controlled aggression and ground-stroke power was a delight and her burgeoning all-round game could soon provide the women?s tour with the consistent champion it has been craving since a foot injury grounded Serena Williams.

She sunk to her knees in elation after screaming to her dream title.

Similar in styles ? physically and vocally - it almost seemed like Sharapova was playing a better version of herself with Azarenka?s domination growing as the match progressed.

After the Daphne Ackhurst trophy for the winner was lowered from the slowly opening roof of Rod Laver Arena and accepted by stunning Swiss legend Martina Hingis, the two combatants met in the centre of the court.

The believed dislike between the two gained momentum with a seemingly cold confrontation ahead of the opening point.

Azarenka, in her first grand slam final, looked wracked by nerves in the early games and her serve was immediately broken to start the match. Sharapova then held, sparking fears the match could be a quickfire disaster.

But Azarenka settled soon after and produced more clearly the more consistent and dangerous tennis. The feisty Belarusian made an important hold under pressure to get the first set to 2-all and went on a searching run to win six of the next seven games to take the first set in 46 minutes.

The telling blow seemed to free Azarenka even more as she appeared to be surging towards her third win over Sharapova in a final in as many meetings.

She broke serve in the first, third and fifth games of the second set to storm to 5-0 lead that Sharapova never looked capable of overcoming. She then fended off a couple of nervous moments to take her place at the head of the women?s rankings.

Azarenka, who is the first Australian Open juniors champion (2005) to claim the senior prize since Chris O?Neill in 1978, has now won four of her seven clashes against Sharapova.

TV producer jailed for stalking

A stalker from London has been jailed for two years for again breaching a court order designed to stop a harassment against a woman he was obsessed with, a court official has said.

Elliot Fogel, 36, was given a life-time restraining order in 2005 banning him from coming within a mile of his married victim, therapist Claire Waxman, The Daily Mail has reported.

Fogel, a former television producer with Sky Sports, is understood to have carried out more than 40,000 internet searches on Waxman's name in one year.

He was previously sentenced to 16 weeks in prison in January 2010 for breaking the terms of the order.

As a result of his nine-year campaign of harassment, Waxman, 36, claims she suffered a miscarriage, developed an eating disorder and had been forced to move home five times.

Fogel reportedly became obsessed with Waxman when they attended Oaklands College in St Albans, Hertfordshire.

While they were never in a relationship, Fogel kept a close watch on Waxman?s life, sent gifts, wrote to her and stalked her.

The life-time restraining order was issued after Fogel was found guilty of harassment at Brent Magistrates' Court in December 2005.

Student finds cocaine in terrorism textbook

A university student got more than she bargained for after a textbook ordered online arrived at her doorstep with a mysterious substance concealed in it.

Sopha Stockton had ordered a terrorism textbook for a class she is taking a Mid America Nazarene University but was alarmed when a bag of white powder fell out of the pages while she was leafing through it.

Stockton feared the package was Anthrax.

"Just a little tiny package falls out with white powder in it,? Stockton told Fox News, ?And I?m like white powder just fell out of my terrorism book. And so my brother was like Oh, that?s scary.?

The next day Stockton carefully took the bag to the Gardner Police Department who then examined it and found the package contained cocaine worth nearly $400.

The book ? titled Understanding Terrorism: Challenges, Perspectives and Issue - was marked "used," indicating an item shipped from a third-party Amazon Marketplace reseller.

Police said they are looking into the matter.

Yahoo cleaning house, lays some of their mobile apps to rest

Yahoo!

I'm not exactly sure how many folks out there use apps from Yahoo but if you're among those that do, you'll want to check the list below. Reason being - Yahoo is laying some of their mobile apps to rest to focus on a whole new set of apps that more so meet users needs. So what apps got the cut?

  • Yahoo! Meme (iPad and iPhone)
  • Yahoo! Mim (iPad)
  • Yahoo! Answers (Android)
  • Yahoo! AppSpot (Android and iPhone)
  • Yahoo! Deals (iPhone)
  • Yahoo! Finance (BlackBerry)
  • Yahoo! Movies (Android)
  • Yahoo! News (Android)
  • Yahoo! Shopping (iPhone)
  • Yahoo! Sketch-a-Search (iPad and iPhone)

That quite a few apps to kill off but from looking at the list, it's looks as though those apps are smaller on the chain and may have a minimal amount of users.
