Burrito Bison is a simple game for gummy bear lovers
As you may have guessed from the name, you're a bison (not a burrito, though). In the course of your day-to-day grocery shopping, you're abducted into a bag of gummy bears, and must now fend for yourself.
At the beginning of each round you launch yourself onto the marching gummy (gummi?) bears, while you're being watched by a huge crowd of even more gummy bears. Your goal is to keep bouncing on the bears and earn more and more money while you do it. Every time you hit a gummy bear, you lose some momentum. If you hit the floor, you basically lose all of it.
But don't give up just yet! You have an emergency thrust which you can use to gain some momentum and keep bouncing on those bears. This extra thrust gets refilled as you hit more bears.
There are also special gummy bears that give you extra thrust or extra money. The money comes in handy at the end of each round, when you can shop for cool stuff to make your bison even more effective against those gummy bears.
It's a fun and colorful game that kept my interest for quite some time, and almost sent me running to the closest store to get some gummy bears!

Best Time to Incorporate ... Is Now
If you incorporate or form an LLC this year, you can make a clean break for taxes. That's only one of many good reasons to take the leap.
One of the most common questions I get as a corporate lawyer is “when should I incorporate?” Like so many questions in law, it has no clear-cut answer: There is no preset size or predetermined best time to form a business entity. If you are a sole proprietor or in a partnership, the question of forming an S-corporation, LLC or other entity has undoubtedly come up before. But even if it was not the right move then, a new year is a good time to give the question some renewed consideration.
The main reason to make the move now around the change of a calendar year is to cleanly break from a personal tax filing to a corporate tax return. But there are other benefits as well to incorporating or starting an LLC. Let’s go over some of them:
You can deduct losses for as long as you have them. As a sole proprietor, you can only turn a loss for so long. Three years in a row, to be exact: you can lose the ability to deduct certain losses on your taxes if you fail to show a profit during three of the last five tax years. If 2012 will be your third year in business (or more) double check your 1040 Schedule Cs – if it looks likely that you will not turn a profit, you run the risk of seeing your business classified by the IRS as a “hobby.” And guess what – hobby losses are more limited than business losses. If you reorganize into a formal business entity, you can continue to show losses without risking deductions.
A formal entity give you more tax flexibility. There are many tax reasons to move to a formal entity – depending on the entity you choose. They include:
- A corporation can offer retirement and medical plans along with greater retirement and life insurance contribution limits than a sole proprietorship or partnership.
- There are no limits or restrictions on the amount of capital or operating losses that a corporation may carry forward or backward to other tax years.
- With a corporation, only salaries (and not the entire profits of the business) are subject to payroll taxes. All income outside of a formal business entity, on the other hand, is subject to self-employment taxes. As of 2011, the combined tax rate is 13.3% on the first $106,800 of income.
A legal business entity lets you keep the business going. A sole proprietorship or partnership terminates when an owner retires or stops working, but a corporation or an LLC keeps going. A legal business entity can live on indefinitely until it sells or transfers ownership, merges with another business or shuts down. This is particularly important if you want to keep a family business going for generations to come.
A legal business can limit your liability. A legal business entity can protect your personal assets against liability for business debts. Regardless of the time of year, limited liability is always a great reason to formalize your business. Take a look at your personal and business situations; both are relevant to making the call here. The status of your company – its growth, customer base and potential liability – and your personal finances should all factor into your decision.
A formal business entity can make you look more “legitimate.” Even though this is not a legal reason, many entrepreneurs find that a formal legal business entity gives a little gravitas to a business. It tells their customers “I’m taking this seriously.” For many, taking the step from a sole proprietor to a shareholder makes entrepreneurship real.
Whatever your reasons are, look into taking your business to the next level in the New Year. If you’re the do-it-yourself type, online options are a great way to save money and time. Take advice from your accountant or lawyer if you are not sure what entity is right for you.

Mac OS X Lion Preview 2 released, introduces mega exciting leather bound iCal skin
There has been some speculation that Apple is getting close to a release or Golden Master build, but judging by 9to5 Mac's initial findings there's definitely some way to go. The Golden Master will probably appear at, or just before, the Apple WWDC in June.
So far, it's looking like the only changes in Preview 2 are the leather bound iCal skin that you can see above, and the main iChat window now combines your AIM, Bonjour and Jabber contacts, like Adium. We're sure that more details will emerge throughout the day, though, and there's bound to be lots of invisible changes, too. We'll update this post when we find out more.

This Month?s Apple Event To Focus On Publishing And iBooks
Apple will be holding a product event later this month in New York, Kara Swisher is reporting, and we've confirmed independently with a source. According to the source the event will not involve any hardware at all and instead will focus on publishing and eBooks (sold through Apple's iBooks platform) rather than iAds. Attendance will also be more publishing industry-oriented than consumer-focused.

There are three types of enemies, at least in the first few levels: "simple" spaceships which fire slow projectiles, "tanks" which seem to be more serious and take more hits to destroy, and "circles." The circles simply explode, spewing twenty or thirty very fast projectiles. This sounds dangerous, but is actually great once you learn to use them; they are very destructive for tanks, and can even blow up other circles.
The soundtrack is very techno, but it meshes very well with this type of game. Intense fun!

Smartphone Activations Hit Record Holiday Highs
Smartphone activations hit record highs this Christmas, with combined Android and iOS activations topping the 6.8 million mark on Dec. 25 alone, according to mobile research firm Flurry Analytics. That's an uptick of more than four times the average number of activations during the three weeks that preceded the holiday, and a 140 percent increase from last year's Christmas Day activations.

Payroll Tax Extension? 2 Months Do Nothing for Small Business
The two-month payroll tax break extension perpetuates economic uncertainty for small business owners and creates logistical headaches for bookkeepers.
Last week, Congress approved a two-month extension to the Temporary Payroll Tax Cut Continuation Act of 2011. The extension continues the reduction of employees' Social Security tax withholding rate from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent of wages paid through the end of February 2012.
For employees, it was moderately good news: a guaranteed extra few dollars in their paychecks.
But small business owners, accountants, and some politicians say the two-month extension may have done more damage than good because they now don't know if the tax cut will extend beyond February, and the lack of certainty, like all economic policy, makes it hard to plan out financial (and hiring) decisions for the year ahead. Congress will vote again on the cut in 2012, and it could be extended—or it might not be.
Gary Desilets, president of Deckscapes of Virginia in Manassas, told The Washington Post, "How do I plan for two to three years down the road when I have an economic policy that’s short term? I've had to ignore the policies and just hope for the best."
Accountants are shaking their heads. Paul Herman, a CPA and president of Herman & Company CPA's in White Plains, New York, says the extended payroll tax cut "will definitely cause a headache for small business accountants."
Kimberly Fourman, a CPA with Loggins & Associates, an accounting firm in Jonesboro, Georgia, explains one potential logistical hiccup of the extension. This week, she ran the 1/1/2012 payroll for one of her clients using QuickBooks, one of the most popular tax software for small business accounting. Even though Fourman had the most recent update installed, QuickBooks determined the payroll taxes incorrectly. It pegged them at 6.2 percent for the employee portion instead of 4.2 percent.
"I just happened to catch it because I knew to look for it," she says. "How many bookkeepers for small businesses around the country have already ran their 1/1/2012 payroll incorrectly? They will have to amend the paychecks, or withhold even less on the next payroll check in order to make up for too much taken out for the incorrect payroll."
San Diego State University accounting professor, Dr. Nathan Oestreich says that the harsh effects on those who process payrolls—the on again, off again, no accurate forms, and potential penalties make the two-month extension a logistical nightmare.
"The burden on small businesses will be enormous," he says. "One needs to ask whether the toll on these people can be justified."
Small business owners and politicians also point to larger payroll tax issues underscored by the short-term extension.
At a press conference late last week, House Speaker John Boehner said that "a two-month extension only perpetuates the uncertainty that too many employers already have in dealing with the economy and what's coming out of Washington."
He added: "The paper work requirement and programming requirement will make it virtually impossible for those who provide payroll services to do the job their employers hired them to do…The fact is, we can do better."
Tim Reynolds, who owns Tribute Inc., a software development firm in Hudson, Ohio, agrees with Boehner, telling Marketplace.org that the extension is another "example of the uncertainty that Congress in general, and for that matter, the administration has created over the last several years. I think that he's right that a two-month extension is essentially meaningless, both to employees and to employers."
And Zalmi Duchman owner and CEO of The Fresh Diet, an Inc. 500 company based in Surfside, Florida with nearly $20 million in annual revenue in 2010, said he was most bothered that the extension leaves out any tax cuts that would help business owners. He says that an employer tax credit, which was tabled by the Senate early on in the negotiations, would have saved his business nearly $4,000 a month or $50,000 a year.
"That would motivate us to hire more people," he says.
Mark Stevens, CEO of MSCO, a marketing and consulting firm in Rye Brook, New York, notes that tax breaks are always welcome to small business owners. The problem is, he says, is that a modest payroll tax cut—and a temporary one at that—doesn't even register on the Richter scale.
"Small business is vastly over-taxed and over-regulated," he says. "This new payroll cut is a political device designed by bureaucrats not businesspeople. What would be significant is a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for every unemployed person small business hires. That would provide great talent for entrepreneurial companies and would eliminate unemployment overnight. This silly 'cut' now in the news is a beltway joke."

Kicked in the Pants by an Accountant
Only twice in the history of my business have I been truly terrified. Both times, it was my accountant -- yes, you read that right -- who jolted me back to business.
There have only been two events in my company’s 15-year history that really scared me and shook my confidence as a leader. Both times, a ninja disguised as an accountant jolted me back to reality – and back to business.
In 2004 I survived what I refer to as my one and only (I hope) divorce. It was with my business partner, not my husband. It was still plenty traumatic. My business partner was responsible for managing the company’s books from New Jersey while I focused on sales and team management in California. After seven years together, it became clear my partner and I were no longer aligned in our goals for the company. The result was a tortuous and expensive 18-month battle, concluding with a 20-hour mediation. In the end, I bought her share of the company. Terrified, I took the reins alone. And that’s when I discovered my partner left me with a financial nightmare.
I couldn’t share the fear and frustration with my team or clients. It was time to be a swan: grace and serenity above the water, and beneath, paddling like crazy. I thought about walking away and starting over when a friend recommended an accountant at a large local firm. I thought a big firm was overkill for my small business, but I immediately bonded with the accountant. Tammy was young, smart and confident. She told me with absolute certainty the broken parts of my business were fixable and I darn well had to do this because I had created something special.
Then she quickly set up the accounting so I had clear insight into our finances. She created checks and balances to maintain security and accountability. Then she kicked my shell-shocked butt back to doing what I did best: reaching out to clients and keeping our team focused. Within one year we had recouped the cost of the partner buyout. We were back.
Four years later, in 2009, the U.S. economy took a dive and the tech sector, which makes up most of our clientele, was hit particularly hard. Forty percent of our clients lost their jobs. Every marketing budget was frozen. Our revenues dropped 50 percent that year. Again, I was terrified. I refused to lay people off, so we slashed expenses everywhere, turning over every proverbial sofa cushion for the tiniest savings. We survived the year with a temporary 10 percent across-the-board salary reduction. In 2010, we slowly regained momentum.
Last year, with things looking up again, Tammy asked my vice president and I this question: “So, what do you want for yourself and the company now?”
I didn’t know. Just grateful to still be here, I thought. Salaries were restored and I was taking a small draw again. My vice-president and I were both unable to answer the question with any conviction.
Tammy went off on us. “Well, if you don’t want more for yourself and the company, I have serious concerns about this management team!” she said. I’d never seen her like this. I tried to explain how happy I was the glass was no longer empty, but it was no use. We all left frustrated and emotional.
The next day my vice president and I met early in the morning over coffee and scones. “Oh, hell yes,” we both blurted out, emphatically. Yes, we did want much more for the business, our team and ourselves. And boy, were we ready to show Tammy.
This year, my company grew 73 percent over 2010 and 193 percent over 2009—with the same number of employees. Tammy does not tell me what to do, but she knows exactly which buttons to push to fire me up and achieve our true potential.
Every business owner needs a swift kick in the pants once in a while.

Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple
It's not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal -- but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn't matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.
This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia's creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!
As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

Casio's G-Shock GB-6900 watch was originally set to roll out sometime this year (having even made an appearance at FCC way back in July) but, according to TechCrunch, the company was forced to delay its release to due to shortages resulting from the Thailand floods. Now it looks like you'll be able to finally pick one up on March 16th of next year -- at least in Japan, where it's set to run ¥18,000 (or about $230). Of course, we wouldn't be covering this if it was just an ordinary G-Shock watch. The key feature here is Bluetooth LE connectivity (part of the Bluetooth 4.0 spec), which consumes far less power than other Bluetooth variations, and allows the watch to communicate with your smartphone. As you might expect from that tiny display, that functionality is a bit more limited than something like Motorola's MOTOACTV, but it will let you see incoming calls, emails and text messages, and control some basic features like your phone's ringer or alarm.

Extreme or Inappropriate? How to Manage an 'Edgy' Conversation
If you worry too much about being accepted, you won't be following your passion--and making a real difference.
Daniel Waldschmidt is one of the most aggressive and fresh thinkers that I have had a chance to interact with in the sales, sales consulting, sales training and sales development in the market place. He’s an aggressive blogger and an advocate for “edgy” conversations.

What does “authenticity” mean in the world of selling?
As soon as I hear someone use the word “authentic,” I know they’re full of crap. What we’ve forgotten about authenticity is that you can’t do things to be authentic. It’s not something you do; it’s something that is.
It reminds me of the old TV show, Dallas, where J.R Ewing said, ‘Once you’re able to fake integrity, the rest of it’s easy.’
That’s exactly right. As soon as you start manufacturing it–”I’m going to be authentic and here is my 5-step program”–then you have proven how much you don’t get it.
Don’t be a jerk, don’t be selfish, be kind, love other people, and talk about the real stuff, the stuff that is really gritty. That’s what most of us don’t talk about, right? We try to pretend like everything’s OK. Look at our performance. If we’re all good, how come we’re not doing so well?
You talk about “edgy conversations.” What does that mean?
As I look at companies that are successful … They all exhibit extreme behavior, they all exhibit a disciplined activity, they exhibit a giving mindset and they all have a human strategy. All four of them are important. When I say edgy conversations, I want to have conversations that matter.
Let’s just stay on the point of extreme for just a second. How do you separate edgy or extreme from inappropriate?
One man’s aggressive is another man’s inappropriate, right? It’s almost like flirting. If you flirt and the other person flirts back, then you’re OK, right? But if you flirt and they don’t, then, oops, you’ll get the call from HR.
I don’t really care about the line, and maybe I should, but you know, did Mahatma Gandhi look at what was inappropriate when he said ‘I’m not going to eat until you give me independence?’ Did he? I don’t think he did.
That’s where we’ve lost our magic in business. We’ve decided that we want to be accepted by others, we want to be appreciated by others, right now. [We focus on] immediate gratification, rather than doing the things that make us immortal.
Steve Jobs is another one of those unyielding, uncompromising, aggressive, ‘edgy,’ immortal people. But every one of those people spent their time in the desert: They were ostracized; they had moments of self-doubt. Many sales people feel right now as if they are in their own desert. How can those people find their power voice?
One word: discipline. Steve Jobs built a company, got kicked out of the company and returned–and in the years that he was back at Apple, the value of Apple increased 9,000 percent. During the same period of time, Microsoft increased in value 5 percent. Intel increased 14 percent. It was discipline … It’s what you’re willing to do without until you get there. That’s where you find your center: “I will not just do amazing things, but I will deny myself until I reach the success that every fiber of my being cries out for.”
How can sales people take the first step to dial up their conversation? What would you recommend that they do to take it up a notch?
I think the hardest thing, which is also the place where you have to start, is to love people. It’s hard. We as people have sticky, nasty2 habits, but when you love others you begin this process of loving yourself, and then you begin a process of creating value that others can buy into. I think that’s where you start, by loving someone else.

A leaked early version of RIM's upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won't get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer -- only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that's really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.
